From a distance, the open prairie is breathtaking. Up close, it is treacherous. Yucca blades can slice tender flesh, legs can twist in prairie dog holes and rattlesnakes coil behind sandstone outcroppings. A horse born in this environment has to be smart and alert just to survive. The foals and yearlings available from Cheyenne Canyon Paints and Quarter Horses are raised in the rocky sandstone cliffs south of Hot Springs, South Dakota. These foals have highly developed senses, unusual intelligence and high-stepping gaits that help them avoid hazards on the ground.

Nature refines our horses, but we start with top-quality brood mares and stallions. We have two sales programs: APHA and AQHA foals and yearlings. We have almost 100 registered quarter and paint mares that we breed to our registered paint and quarter horse stallions. Our stallions and mares were selected for their agreeable dispositions and all have excellent bloodlines, including Northern Dancer, Three Bars, Sugar Bars, Sun Frost and Husler’s Ole Man.

Doc’s Smooth Playboy, Hunt’s Lonesum Frost and Ole Sugar Alamitos and their bands of beautiful mares offer many quality Paint and Quarter foals each year. Years of survival have created pure and strong bloodlines, and our mustangs have exceptional endurance, intelligence and sensory awareness. Our registered horses are the culmination of decades of careful breeding; our wild horses are the spectacular result of natural selection.

Strong bloodlines, good feed and life in the wild produce superior foals. The registered foals are show quality, and they make exceptional pleasure or ranch horses.
